What Are Altcoins? Types, Examples and the Risks Nobody Mentions

Every cryptocurrency that is not Bitcoin is an altcoin — but they are not all the same. A clear guide to the main types of altcoins, what they do, and the risks behind the hype.

“Altcoin” simply means any cryptocurrency other than Bitcoin — short for “alternative coin”. There are thousands of them, and while a few are serious technology projects, many are experiments, copies or outright scams. Knowing the categories helps you tell the difference.

The main types of altcoins

  • Smart contract coins (like ETH and SOL) power networks where apps are built.
  • Stablecoins (like USDT and USDC) are designed to hold a steady value, usually one US dollar.
  • Payment coins (like XRP and LTC) focus on fast, cheap transfers.
  • Exchange tokens (like BNB) give discounts or benefits on a trading platform.
  • Memecoins (like DOGE) are driven by jokes and community hype rather than technology.
  • Governance tokens let holders vote on how a project is run.

Why people buy altcoins

Smaller coins can rise faster than Bitcoin because their markets are smaller — the same reason they can crash harder. Investors also buy altcoins to use the networks behind them, for example paying fees or staking.

The risks nobody mentions

  • Low liquidity: small coins can be hard to sell without crashing the price.
  • Unlock schedules: early investors’ coins often unlock later and flood the market.
  • Dead projects: most altcoins from previous cycles never recovered their highs.
  • Rug pulls: anonymous teams can abandon a token and vanish with the funds.

Altcoins are the high-risk end of an already risky market. Research the team, the supply schedule and the real usage before buying — and treat memecoins as entertainment money, not investment.
