EUR CoinVertible Explained: Société Générale’s Euro Stablecoin

EUR CoinVertible is a euro stablecoin issued by Société Générale's digital asset arm, SG-FORGE. How it works, why a major bank issued it, and why euro stablecoins matter.

Most stablecoins are dollars in digital form, issued by specialist crypto companies. EUR CoinVertible breaks both patterns: it is pegged to the euro, and its issuer is the digital asset subsidiary of one of France’s biggest banks. The token, known by its ticker EURCV, is issued by SG-FORGE, the blockchain-focused arm of Société Générale, and is designed to hold a steady one-to-one value against the euro, backed by euro reserves.

A bank that moved early

SG-FORGE is not a newcomer chasing a trend. In July 2023 it became the first company to receive a full digital asset service provider licence — the French PSAN licence — from France’s markets regulator. That first-mover position matters: while many banks were still writing cautious reports about crypto, Société Générale’s subsidiary was building regulated products inside the French legal framework, and EUR CoinVertible is its flagship token.

Built for the MiCA era

EURCV is structured as an electronic money token under the EU’s MiCA regulation, the same legal category that now sits at the centre of France’s stablecoin tax debate. That classification is the point. A MiCA-compliant token comes with rules on how reserves are held, how redemptions work and what the issuer must disclose — the kind of framework that compliance departments at banks, asset managers and large companies actually require before they will touch a stablecoin.

Why a euro stablecoin matters

  • Settlement in euros: European firms trading tokenised assets can settle in their home currency instead of converting through dollars.
  • Euro-denominated DeFi: lending, trading and collateral markets need a credible euro token to grow beyond dollar pairs.
  • Institutional comfort: a token issued by a regulated banking group is an easier internal approval than an offshore issuer.
  • Payments: a bank-issued euro token offers a bridge between traditional accounts and blockchain payment rails.

The honest caveats

Euro stablecoins remain tiny next to their dollar rivals, and liquidity — how easily you can trade meaningful size without moving the price — is the metric that decides whether professionals actually use them. A famous issuer helps, but depth of markets matters more. EUR CoinVertible is therefore best read as infrastructure: a regulated euro building block whose importance will grow only if exchanges, DeFi protocols and corporate treasurers build on top of it. As with any stablecoin, users should check how reserves are held and audited before trusting the peg.
