Can You Hold Crypto ETNs in an ISA? The UK Rules Explained

Crypto ETNs are back on sale in the UK, but the tax wrapper rules are unusual: from April 2026 they sit only in Innovative Finance ISAs, not mainstream ones. Here is how it works.

An ISA is the UK’s tax-free savings and investment wrapper: money inside it is sheltered from income tax and capital gains tax, which is why British investors naturally ask whether the newly available crypto exchange-traded notes can go inside one. The answer is yes — but only in one specific type of ISA, and the detail matters.

The rule from April 2026

When the FCA reopened retail access to Bitcoin and Ethereum ETNs in October 2025, a separate tax question followed: which ISA, if any, could hold them? Under the HMRC position reported in coverage of the change, from April 2026 crypto ETNs are excluded from mainstream stocks and shares ISAs and can only be held inside an Innovative Finance ISA.

That is an unusual home for them. Innovative Finance ISAs were created for peer-to-peer lending and similar alternative investments, not for exchange-traded securities, and far fewer providers offer them than offer ordinary investment ISAs. In practice, that means:

  • Your existing stocks and shares ISA provider may not offer an Innovative Finance ISA at all.
  • You may need to open a separate account with a specialist provider to hold crypto ETNs tax-efficiently.
  • Availability of the specific ETN you want is not guaranteed on every platform.

What an ETN in an ISA actually gives you

Remember what the product is: an ETN tracks the price of Bitcoin or Ether but does not give you ownership of any coins. Inside an ISA, the tax treatment of gains and income follows the wrapper’s rules; outside one, you are in normal investment tax territory. The wrapper changes the tax, not the risk — the note can still fall heavily in value, and crypto ETNs carry no FSCS protection.

Checks to make before you act

ISA rules are specific, technical and prone to change, and a mistake — such as subscribing to the wrong combination of ISAs — can cost you the tax benefits. Before moving money, confirm with the provider that the exact product is eligible in their Innovative Finance ISA, read the current HMRC guidance, and consider a regulated financial adviser for anything substantial. This article explains the reported position; it is not personal tax advice. If the rules have been updated since, the newest HMRC wording is what counts.
